This is a great training game to use for small to medium sized groups. It demonstrates that teams often come to more reasoned solutions than an individual and is perfect for observing communication skills and for negotiation, influencing style interventions.
This training game can be used as part of a training event, during meetings or as an exercise in assessment/development centres.
This training game can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this page.
You are a member of a space crew originally scheduled to rendezvous with a mother ship on the lighted surface of the moon. However, due to technical difficulties, your ship was forced to land at a spot some 200 miles from the rendezvous point.
During re-entry and landing, much of the equipment aboard was damaged and, since survival depends on reaching the mother ship, the most critical items available must be chosen for the 200 mile trip.
The task is to rank the items; firstly as individuals, then as a team and finally as individuals again. You then compare your results with the experts from NASA.
This tests the communication skills of the team to the extreme and can often result in extremely heated debates!
The pack contains three documents; Trainer Notes, Briefing Notes and Expert Ranking.
At the end of the training game session you should review and discuss the achievements during this training game. Points to be noted are behaviour, hindrance and results.
It is usually shown that the difference in the team consensus score to the expert ranking is less than the individual rankings. This shows that teams are more likely to reach a reasoned decision than individuals can on their own.
If the team results are not better than the individual ones, then you can discuss the reasons for this i.e. what held the team back from working well together?
