An Introduction to RIDDOR
WHAT IS IT?
Accidents don’t just happen, something causes them. RIDDOR (The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013) is a UK health and safety legislation, that applies to all “responsible persons” within an organisation and requires them to correctly report and record certain injuries. This includes information about what exactly happened, where it happened, when it happened and what caused it.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
RIDDOR helps to ensure the same accidents don’t happen more than once, forcing employers to take all accidents seriously and deduce the factors that led up to them. In so doing it holds employers responsible for negligence or bad practice in the workplace.
Not only does it encourage employers to evaluate risks, it also helps the UK government (through the Health and Safety Executive) keep a record of work-related incidents. This information allows them to identify where and how risks are arising so they can prevent similar occurrences.
RIDDOR is a legal requirement, and therefore any businesses found to not be reporting incidents and following the procedure correctly are breaking the law and risk heavy fines.
