Building Relationships through Non-Verbal Communication

For those in leadership the building of relationships is crucial to ensure that the team working with them understands their roles clearly and that team morale is high. Good relationships between team members ensures that productivity remains high and with that in mind, managers should take the time to learn more about their own communication skills, especially non-verbal communication, which can often be overlooked for the more obvious communication traits during training sessions.

As we communicate with others our body language is often the main source of information the other person is picking up on; the gestures we make, how we sit or stand around them, the volume of our voice and the type and amount of eye contact we make with them.

To become a better non-verbal communicator you have to look at your own body language and understand how your non-verbal cues affect others. Once you can do that you will understand more clearly the body language of others.

There are a number of things to look out for when it comes to the body language in others:

Repetition: A person might repeat the message they are verbally portraying, with a gesture or movement.

Contradicts the Message: A message might be contradicted by the stance or posture the person delivering it is holding.

Eye Contact: Sometimes eye contact can be used as a substitute for a verbal message, conveying something slightly different.

An Extra Touch: Adding a pat on the back or a handshake to praise someone can add to the positive impact.
