Evolution – Free Energiser

Duration: 10 - 30 minutes

Intended for:

This is a good free energiser to use as part of a change management training course where you want participants to discuss how different things have evolved, how they have had to come to terms with these changes, what it has meant for them and how it’s benefitted them in the long term (or not!)

Training course contents:

A set of instructions for the energiser, ‘Evolution’ can be downloaded for free from the llink at the bottom of this page or you can follow the instructions here.

Instructions – this energiser has a relatively simple set up in that it is discussion based and does not necessarily require any tools or resources. However, it might be useful to produce some images (on PowerPoint or Posters) of the items that you are going to encourage participants to talk about.

The basic premise is that you would like participants to discuss different items that have evolved over the years. For example…

  • Cars
  • Telephones
  • Bicycles
  • Cleaning Products
  • Computers
  • Lighting
  • Sweets or treats
  • Restaurants etc.

The idea is that you develop conversations around how these products have evolved over the years and what this has meant. If you have a mix of older and younger participants this can get really interesting.

Once you start these discussions they gain their own momentum. However, you might want to prompt with questions such as, ‘How did you used to arrange to meet people before mobile phones were around?’, ‘What was it like driving in a car without air conditioning’, or, ‘How have computers changed the way we work in the office?’

When participants are really engaged in conversations based on whatever topic. Introduce some new questions related to change, such as…

  • How did things improve once you’d accepted the new way of doing that?
  • What made it better than the old method?
  • Was it difficult to overcome the challenge of doing things differently?
  • How did you feel when the new system worked?

Of course, you can see that the questions we have provided here will all help you to ‘prove your point’ regarding the change training that you are working on. This energiser will help you to focus participants and ensure they can relate to the benefits of change.

This energiser encourages discussion and understanding around the subject of change and will help participants to relate to change management topics and theory.
