This free icebreaker helps provide participants with the opportunity to introduce themselves to the group in a fun and enlightening way. It is useful for people that have never worked together before or those that know each other a fair bit.
Training course contents:
A set of instructions for the icebreaker, ‘Fancy Dress Party’ can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this page, or you can use the notes below.
Instructions – place several small slips of paper in the middle of each table of participants. Advise them that they have been invited to a fancy dress party where the theme is, ‘All About You’ and so they should choose the fancy dress outfit they think would most suit their personality (if you have a small group, perhaps let them choose more than one). Ask them to write this idea on one of the small slips of paper in front of them and discretely fold it, so that nobody else can see.
Once they have done this, collect all the slips of paper back in and write each of the fancy dress choices in a list on a flipchart.
Go through the list and ask the group to identify which fancy dress outfit they think matches which person in the room.
The fun in this icebreaker is noticing how wrong some impressions can be…or not! One funny example from this icebreaker that we had was a large group of men with only one woman in the room. On the flipchart were the fancy dress choices of, ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Pink Fairy’. Neither was written by the woman.
This icebreaker provides a lighthearted introduction to any training session and manages to involve everyone.
