This free icebreaker is useful to help participants get to know each other and break the ice. The icebreaker is particularly useful for induction events where you can provide facts about the organisation using this activity.
Training course contents:
A set of instructions for the icebreaker, ‘Flipping Reminders’ can be downloaded in Word format from the link at the bottom of this page, or you can use the notes below.
Tools – a coin for each participant.
Preparation – note the dates on the coins that you are going to give to the participants. For each of the dates, write down a fact relating to the topic of the day i.e. for induction training you might write a fact relating to what the organisation was doing or achieving on that date.
Instructions – provide each of the participants with a coin.
Ask them to note the date on the coin and think of something they would have been doing on that date. Once they have thought of something they should pair up with another participant and share their date and what they were doing.
This should last 2 minutes and when this time is up they should both toss the coin. If they both end up with the same side of the coin showing (heads/heads or tails/tails) they should swap coins, otherwise they should keep the same coin.
In both cases they should move on to another participant and do the same again (of course if they have a new coin they will have a new date and should think again what they were doing then). Let this progress until everyone has talked.
In review, discuss the outputs and finally provide your pre-prepared facts for each of the coin dates.
This icebreaker provides a useful method of introducing a session and ensuring everyone has a chance to talk about an aspect of their life that perhaps usually is not highlighted. Good for teams old and new.
