Intended for:
This free energiser is useful where you want to explore the leadership styles of participants and demonstrate that their true skill as a leader comes from times when things are not perfect and they have to work hard. Great for Leadership Skills Training courses.
Training course contents:
A set of instructions for the free energiser, ‘Leadership Challenge’ can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this page, or you can follow the notes below.
Resources Needed – place the following quote onto a slide, flipchart or poster.
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King
Instructions
1. Ask participants to consider the quote and provide a general explanation of what it means to them. Discuss this and explore the thoughts behind it.
2. Place participants into small groups and ask them to consider their own times of challenge and controversy as leaders. They should talk about the challenge itself and the actions they took to overcome the situation.
3. Once they have a few examples they should provide a record of the types of leadership behaviours that came to the front when they were put in the challenging scenario.
4. In review, discuss some of the following issues…
- Whether the actions taken were the best for the situation?
- How they might have dealt with things alternatively?
- What else they could have done?
- Were their actions usual for them?
- Should they change their leadership style to suit different situations?
- Is consistency of behaviour important?
- What would someone else have done?
Add any other questions you feel will get the best out of the discussion. Once you have discussed these issues, use the information to lead into the training topic under discussion and be sure to refer back to the key points.
