Intended for:
This energiser is useful for highlighting the fact that we all make assumptions and that when we communicate we must be careful with the message the person actually receives compared to the one we meant them to get.
Training course contents:
A set of instructions for the energiser, ‘Make a Fist’ can be downloaded in Word format from the link at the bottom of this page, or you can follow the notes below.
Instructions:
Ask for two volunteers to come out to the front of the group. Tell one of the volunteers to make a fist and then ask the other volunteer to open it.
You will find that the first volunteer instinctively tries to stop the other person opening their fist (in 99% of cases!)
Review the energiser by pointing out that you only asked one person to make a fist and the other person to open it, at no point did you ask them to resist. Discuss why this happened and identify the pitfalls of assumptions and inactive listening.
Objectives:
This energiser is quick and easy and demonstrates a point perfectly.
