A core element of wellbeing is a desire to become and remain happy. However, it’s rarely explained to us where this happiness comes from. We all know that certain things, such as talking with friends, or listening to a favourite song can give us feelings of joy, but what is less clear is why this happens.
The truth is, it’s all down to the chemicals in your brain and more specifically, four key chemicals, which are, dopamine, oxytocine, seratonin and endorphins, which are sometimes more conveniently referred to as D.O.S.E. The release of these chemicals causes our brain to react and spread a feeling of happiness and positive emotions.
It’s useful to understand these brain chemicals if we want to improve our wellbeing, as through some simple actions, we can help encourage our brain to increase these positive emotions more often. The actions will probably not be surprising to you once you see them, but knowing why and how they work will give you a chance to support your wellbeing and encourage that happiness we all crave.
Take a look at the following infographic, which gives some clear signals on things you can do to ‘make the most of your happy chemicals’…
