How to Manage a Virtual Team

Posted November 1st, 2017

In the modern world, the makeup of a company isn’t as straightforward as it was even 10 years ago. Instead of a physical office with a desk, computer and telephone for each employee, you’ll now find that many companies work in the virtual world, with staff members spread out across the globe in some cases. If you are tasked with managing a virtual team, how easy is it to keep focused and to produce consistent results? Here’s some tips to help you…

Design Clear Working Systems – The first thing you should to is to create standards that your entire virtual team has to follow. This minimises questions, reduces faults over time and increases efficiencies and productivity the longer you work with your team.

Clear and Flexible Lines of Communication – Your team members should be able to contact you in an emergency, or if they have a query that will make their task easier and more effective. Open up a few different channels of communication; use some for everyday chat, others for video conferencing, and others for serious project discussion.

Meet on a Regular Basis – Just because you don’t sit next to someone physically, it doesn’t mean they don’t want to chat to you regularly. To stay focused on a project, hold weekly meetings at the same time to build a familiarity with team members and the project, and to make it feel more like a job in the traditional sense, with responsibilities and focus.
