Tips for selling over the phone
Making phone calls is arguably one of the most tedious parts of business, especially if your job is in telesales. You get yelled at, cursed at, hung up on, or told people’s life stories hundreds of times a week. But it is possible to make more sales over the phone without anyone’s hand “accidently” reaching for the button to hang up the phone.
Firstly, be confident. Confidence is the most vital part of selling over the phone. You want to speak in a clear, friendly, even tone of voice to show that you’re a professional who knows what they’re doing. Laugh with your customer, ask them if they’ve had a nice day so far, and converse with them while you’re selling them the product or service that you’ve called up about. By the end of the call, they shouldn’t think twice about buying, especially if you can entice them in with extra products or sale prices.
Listen to your customer. The occasional “uh-huh” isn’t quite good enough to show that you’re engaging with them. Having a conversation with your customer over the phone is no different to having one with them opposite you. Cling to bits of what they say, answer them, engage with the story that they’re telling you.
Make your product or service interesting. What can you offer your customer than 10 other companies couldn’t offer them today? Talk about sales, additional products, strange uses for the product that your other customers have called up about. An interesting service will sell.
